2010 is being celebrated as the International year of Biodiversity. Conservation of biodiversity provides substantial benefits to meet immediate human needs, such as those for clean, consistent water flows; protection from floods and storms; and a stable climate. Hence students of PSBBSS T.P. Road adopted the current topic as their theme for this year's Science day celebrations on 26th Feb 2010, so that through their programmes they could reach out to others on various aspects of Biodiversity, including its importance and most importantly the need to conserve biodiversity. They achieved this by having a series of stage and room activities.
Stage activities started with an invocation song followed by the introduction to science day and a welcome address. Students of STD 8 then threw light on 'what Biodiversity is?' with their power point presentation. Students of kindergarten explained Biological Diversity with the help of an action song. Through their programme they conveyed the message that Biodiversity is in many things and everything helps everything on this Earth. Students of STD 1st to 3rd presented the programme 'Purr to Growl' to explain what 'Species Diversity' is? They explained the species diversity by classifying different types of cats around the world. Students of middle school presented a skit to explain 'Genetic Diversity'. They covered the advantages and disadvantages of using BT technology and the controversy related to BT Brinjal.
Our chief guest, Mrs. Mangalam Balasubramanian, President Pammal Exnora, enlightened the students on 'Solid waste management at the source'. Our beloved Dean & Director Dr. Mrs. YGP too shared her views on Biodiversity and distributed prizes to the winners Durga Devi & Mirithika S.P. of STD 7 'A' for A.K.Samban Award to reward their creativity in science.
Room activities had models and charts explaining topics of concern related to Biodiversity. Students of STD 3rd to 8th were taken to see the same. Overall, it was a wonderful learning experience for the students as well as others.
